Roof damage typically occurs naturally from hail storms, strong blowing wind, extreme hot and cold temperatures and debris blown onto your roof. But there are some common mistakes that people make that cause damage to their roof as well. This post is meant to educate homeowners in Colorado so they don’t make the same mistakes.
Clogged Gutters – Components of your roofing system work together to keep the water out and your gutters are an important part of this system. Your gutters main job is to get the water and debris from your roof to the ground and away from the homes foundation. When your gutters are clogged they can’t do their job and water tends to go where it isn’t supposed to. The water overflows the gutters and can over time cause problems to your homes foundation but it can also damage your roof. The water can get in behind the fascia, the soffit and damage the support beams to your roofing system. When this happens the supports can rot and weaken and won’t be able to handle the load of the roof – and now you’ve got a big problem.
Trimming Trees – A lot of the storm damage that a roof gets isn’t a direct result of the storm but rather from tree branches falling on the roof or scraping the top of the roof when the wind blows. Keeping your trees trimmed and far from your roof will help to protect your roof from unnecessary damage.
Pressure Washing – This isn’t as common a practice in Arvada Colorado because we don’t have the mold problems that exist in more humid environments. But occasionally we find a homeowner that wants to clean the debris from their roof and they think a good pressure wash will do the trick. Most Arvada roofing companies install asphalt shingle roofs that will not hold up to pressure washing. The granules on the shingles are designed to protect the roof and pressure washing will remove the granules defeating their purpose.
Unskilled DIY Repairs – If you know what you’re doing you can get on your roof, inspect it and make repairs and install antennas or satellite dishes, but all too often DIY homeowners attempt to make their own repairs and it doesn’t go well. Just walking around on your roof can cause damage, especially if you have a tile roof. If you aren’t 100% sure you know what you’re doing, you should leave your roof maintenance to the professionals.
